What is a birth chart reading?

Your birth chart, also called a natal chart, maps the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and other points when and where you were born. The reading interprets those placements through astrology.

The Star Chart is a personalized astrology reading for adults. It looks at what drives you and the patterns that repeat in your relationships, at work, and in your inner life. The questions ask you to compare those descriptions with your own experience. The practical suggestions give you something to try. You decide what fits and what is useful.

Three parts of a placement

A placement name usually tells you which planet or point you’re reading about, its sign, and its house.

Planet or point: The planet or point sets the subject of the reading. The Moon covers emotional needs, Venus covers connection, and Mercury covers thinking and communication. Some placements, such as the Rising sign, are calculated points, not planets.
Sign: The sign describes how that part of life is expressed.
House: The house focuses the reading on an area of life, such as home, relationships, creativity, or work.

Reading a placement name

In “Venus in Taurus in the 7th house,” Venus is the planet, Taurus is the sign, and the 7th house supplies the area of life. All three shape the interpretation.

You can start reading before you know what every symbol means. These three placements each cover a different part of you:

Your Sun reading looks at your sense of identity and the patterns you keep returning to.
Your Moon reading explores your emotional needs and what helps you feel settled.
Your Rising reading describes how you meet the world and the version of you people tend to encounter first.

Read one placement at a time. If two descriptions seem to pull in different directions, consider whether they fit different situations. You can want closeness in one moment and independence in another.

Pick a passage that catches your attention and think of a recent situation it brings to mind. Use that situation as you work through the reflection questions.

Ask yourself where you’ve noticed the pattern in your own behavior and where the description doesn’t fit. Then choose one small suggestion to try, and pay attention to what happens.

If a description doesn’t resonate, leave it. The reading may help you find words for something you’ve experienced, and your understanding of yourself can change over time.
